Breast Augmentation: What You Need To Know

Breast augmentations are one of the most sought after cosmetic breast surgery procedures. It is a popular procedure for women who desire to increase the size of their breasts. Breast augmentation can deliver satisfying results whether you simply want larger breasts, would like to balance asymmetrical or disproportioned breasts, or if you are looking to regain the fullness in your breasts that has been lost from weight loss, breastfeeding or aging. Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that requires you to be well informed in order to achieve your desired results.  Dr. Michael R. Whetstone has performed breast augmentation surgery for over 25 years and if Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

Size:

Choosing an implant size and shape that will best fit your breasts and your body is a crucial step in breast augmentation because an implant that is too big or too small can have negative results both aesthetically and physically. It is important to remember that choosing an implant size is not as easy as choosing a cup size. Cup size varies among manufacturers and even among products from the same company and is not an accurate method of choosing an implant size. Having a desired cup size is a good starting point, but the most effective way to find your ideal implant size is by using implant sizers. Implant sizers can be stuffed into a bra or shirt in order to give you a better visual picture of the end result. Implant sizers are of greater help in determining a desired and proportionate implant volume.

Silicone vs. Saline:

Implants are available in two main options: silicone-filled or saline-filled. Both types of implants have a solid outer silicone shell, but each filler option has its own advantages and disadvantages. Dr. Whetstone will explain the differences in the implants in great detail and can help you to determine which implant will best fit your body and goals.

Silicone implants are filled with a liquid silicone gel and typically feel softer and more natural. Silicone implants have a lower risk of rippling or wrinkling, and a slightly lower deflation rate.

Saline implants are inserted as empty shells and are filled after they have been placed.  Saline implants are more likely to show ripples in the breast in some patients.

Realistic Expectations:

It is important to be realistic in your expectations from your breast surgery. Breasts can naturally be asymmetrical and consequently a degree of asymmetry is to be expected even after a breast augmentation procedure.  Cleavage is dependent on the position of your breasts; so if your breasts naturally are wider separated do not expect to have tighter cleavage from implants.  Providing yourself with realistic expectations will help you to make the most appropriate decisions for your body as well as reduce potential post-surgery disappointment or frustrations.  Discussing your goals and desires with your surgeon are an important part of the surgeon/patient partnership.
